Charles Joyner: The K1 Champion Chasing UFC Dreams

Spotlight on SAFE MMA Fighters

For Cage Warriors’ Charles Joyner, the fight began long before the cage door shut behind him for the first time. From the athletic fields of Sydney to the bright lights of international kickboxing, and now, his tenacious ascent through MMA, Joyner’s journey is one marked by bold decisions, relentless discipline, and an unwavering belief in perseverance.

Charles Joyner

Now 30 years old, Joyner boasts an amateur MMA record of 4-2-1 and an impressive collection of K1 titles to his name: Australian, Commonwealth, Oceania, South Pacific, and ISKA Intercontinental Champion. But ask him about his beginnings, and he’ll tell you he wasn’t always destined for the cage.

“I did a variety of sports growing up—mainly football, basketball, and athletics,” he says. “I only started kickboxing at 20, just for fun.” That “fun” quickly evolved. A few years of dedicated training saw him turn pro in kickboxing, and eventually, the call of MMA—first sparked by watching UFC bouts—became impossible to ignore.

Unlike many fighters juggling family and full-time jobs, Joyner has been able to dedicate himself almost entirely to the sport. “I’m very lucky,” he says. “I do a few personal training sessions a week to pay the bills, but I enjoy that, so it doesn’t feel like work.”

While his current setup supports his career, Joyner’s path hasn’t been without serious challenges. One of the toughest came in 2021 during Australia’s strict COVID lockdowns. “The whole country was shut down, and no one knew when fights would return. I had to make a decision.” With a UK passport in hand, he made the life-altering choice to relocate. “Leaving behind a strong reputation, a great team, and everything familiar to start fresh in another country—that was a defining moment. But I knew all I needed to do was persevere.”

Now training out of the UK, Joyner is preparing for his next bout on June 27th at Cage Warriors 190 Unplugged, on one of Europe’s most respected MMA platforms. “My approach to training remains the same,” he explains. “Focus on improving my skills every day.”

For Joyner, winning isn’t just about the result—it’s about the process. “Winning means the world,” he says, “but it’s not the end of the world if you don’t win. As long as I perform to the best of my ability, that’s all I can ask for.”

Key to that performance is his focus on overall well-being. “Health is crucial to training. If you’re unhealthy, you can’t get the most out of yourself,” he says. That means prioritizing sleep, recovery, and nutrition with the same intensity as his fight prep.

Part of that commitment includes working with Safe MMA, as the voluntary body overseeing medical safety for fighters in the UK. “Safe MMA has always been easy to work with,” Joyner says. “Fighter health is vital. Avoidable incidents can cast a dark shadow over the sport. With proper testing, a lot of that risk can be avoided.”

With a goal clearly in sight, Joyner’s path is well defined: win at Cage Warriors, and keep climbing. “Eventually, I want to make my way to the UFC,” he states, without hesitation.

Charles Joyner is more than a decorated striker. He’s a fighter shaped by bold choices, grounded by discipline, and driven by a vision that goes far beyond the next bell. Whether in Australia or the UK, the mission stays the same: fight smart, fight hard, and keep moving forward.
